Our experiences are deeply influenced — some would say created — by our perceptions and beliefs. This is especially true with something as primal as childbirth. According to Gayle Peterson, PhD, we birth as we live. If we live melodramatically, for example, we might be more likely to experience birth melodramatically. If we think of ourselves as a victim, we might play the victim in childbirth. And, if we have experienced birth as an emergency, perhaps because a parent was in the medical profession, we may understandably see birth as crisis.

If we get in touch with our own attitudes and beliefs regarding birth we will get to know ourselves better. Simply by bringing awareness to our perceptions, they change.

The work of two pioneering scientists strongly suggests that thoughts influence matter. Dr. Masuru Emoto, author of Hidden Messages in Water, exposed music, spoken words, typed words, pictures and videos to water and then photographed the water crystals. He found that water from clear springs and water exposed to loving words show brilliant, complex, and colorful snowflake patterns, while polluted water and water exposed to negative thoughts form incomplete, asymmetrical patterns with dull colors.
